As some of you might know I only wash my hair once a month but when I do get down to my wash days I reach for the product that I have entrusted my strands to for years which is VO5 Tea Therapy Conditioner. I really have stemmed the best results in cleanliness sans that ultra-dry feeling. Now I know this is not an all- natural product but VO5 Tea Therapy is a silicone free product. What exactly are silicones you might be wondering? Basically silicones form a thin layer around the hair shaft. Silicones are found in many products and the reason why manufacturers place silicones into their products is because of the smoothing effect silicones can give the hair especially in your hair’s wet state. That SSS feeling (super, slippery, smooth) you experience after washing your hair is the effect of silicone products.
Silicones can prevent the hair shaft from allowing too much humidity to penetrate the hair shaft while keeping intact your own hair’s moisture. The over-all scheme of silicone’s intentions of keeping the hair moisturized are definitely good but in actuality that buildup around the hair shaft can lead to dryness and damage in most cases because of the prevention of moisture from reaching your strand’s cortex.
How do you recognize silicones in products? Basically when you view the ingredients of the product anything ending in cone such as cyclomethicone is a silicone. Now just like anything all silicones are not on equal playing grounds. Some silicones such as dimethicone also known as simethicone are much heavier which means a thicker layer around your hair shaft that leads to more buildup because theses silicones are more difficult to wash out of your hair now lighter silicones such as Cyclomethicones evaporate quickly and leaves that SSS feeling we all love.
