I know some of you may be thinking where the heck do you buy activated charcoal, never mind using it as part of your beauty regimen?! Well ladies, I have added activated charcoal to my beauty regimen, using it as a teeth whitener and a face mask and I’m loving it! Activated charcoal is carbon that’s treated with oxygen. It’s used to treat gastrointestinal issues and counteracts ingestion of poisons and drugs. It makes a great face mask because it’s very porous and absorptive drawing substances to itself. These qualities make it great for clearing up blemishes and cleansing your skin of toxins. You may have even heard of the activated Charcoal mask from the brand Origins . The carbon also cleans teeth like no other by removing acidic plaque which whitens and brightens. The beautiful thing about incorporating charcoal into your beauty regimen is it’s all natural and safe!

You can find activated charcoal capsules at your local Vitamin Shoppe (where I purchased mine), CVS, or online.

***Somethings to keep in mind when dealing with activated charcoal: It can be a bit messy and stain things. Other than that it’s easily rinsed off with water from skin and non porous surfaces, and can be washed out of clothing. When using it as a teeth whitener limit use to 1-2 times a week to avoid wear on tooth enamel.

For teeth whitener you will need:

A tooth brush, tooth paste, and an activated charcoal capsule.

Carefully open activated charcoal capsule.

Apply toothpaste to the toothbrush and dip it into the charcoal powder completely covering the toothpaste. Begin to brush your teeth as usual. You will notice your mouth turn black which is pretty cool, you can brush with just water to get it completely out of your mouth.

For the face mask you will need:

1 teaspoon activated charcoal (in powder form)

1 teaspoon aloe vera gel or juice

1 teaspoon water or rosewater

5 drops tea tree oil

1 pinch sea salt

Small container

Mix all the ingredients together.
Apply a thin even layer all over your face. Allow the mask to dry and then wash off.
This mask is safe for most skin types, but you should first do a spot test to make sure this mask is right for you. Apply to a small patch of skin, let dry, wash off. Wait 24 hours to see how your skin reacts.
