My musical palette reveals so many colors and ranges in drastic degrees from classical, indie, rap, new age, soul, world, alternative, reggae, broadway, jazz, house, blues, rock, etc but as a black woman I have been given the side eye more than a few times when I mention some of my favorites who happen to fall under the rock category such as Led Zeppelin,  Jimi Hendrix, Joni Mitchell  and Pink Floyd, as though an unseen force or kryptonite was exposed to dispel my “true” blackness even despite throwing out many others like Marvin Gaye, Michael Jackson, Tupac, Donny Hathaway, Prince, Bob Marley, Otis Redding and Aretha Franklin. Unfortunately some define your character based on the type of music you prefer to rock with no matter how wide your musical palette may be so my question is to you:

Why do you feel some want to place stereotypes against you due to your musical taste?
