Singer-songwriter, arranger, multi-instrumentalist, record producer, and actor, Lenny Kravitz can now add shoe designer to his multi-faceted repertoire. Kravitz collaborated with founder of TOMS shoes, Blake Mycoskie and his in-house design team to produce a line entirely inspired by Kravitz. Integrating patterns, and prints into the brands signature slip-ons, the collection even offers espadrilles featuring the title of his song “Let Love Rule”.

“No shoes in my house. I like to lay around the floors, and I have nice floor coverings and shags and sheepskins, and I don’t like bringing in things from the outside.” Kravitz now has TOMS stocked in his home for all of his guests.

For those of you not familiar with TOMS Shoes, this by no means is an ordinary shoe company. With a mission statement of “With every pair of shoes you purchase, TOMS will give a new pair to a child in need. ONE for ONE”, this brand truly reaches above and beyond in helping thy neighbor. Founder Blake Mycoskie‘s inspiration for the mission came to fruition in 2006. While vacationing in Argentina and befriending some of the local children, he realized many of these children had no means for any form of footwear. Later that year Mycoskie returned with family, friends, staff and over 10,000 shoes in tow to donate to the community which was made feasible through TOMS customers.

“The leading cause of disease in developing countries is soil-transmitted parasites that penetrate the skin through open sores caused by walking barefoot. In most of these countries, walking is the main mode of transportation, and going barefoot causes cuts and sores that can be both painful and dangerous. TOMS Shoes is taking a huge step toward helping children in these countries, matching every pair of shoes purchased with a pair for a child in need.

The effects of wearing shoes run deeper than just disease prevention. Many schools in these countries require shoes as part of the uniform. Without shoes, children can’t attend school. And without school, their futures are greatly limited.

Since the company’s inception in 2006, TOMS has given more than 140,000 pairs of shoes to children in need and plans to donate more than 300,000 pairs of shoes in 2009 alone. The company has provided shoes for children in Argentina, South Africa, Ethiopia and the United States.

TOMS Shoes’ main focus for 2009 is preventing a horrible disease in Ethiopia called podoconiosis. Podo is a deforming and debilitating foot disease caused by walking barefoot in silica-rich soil; it has affected nearly 1 million people. In an effort to decrease that number, TOMS is now giving a special rubber boot to at-risk children in Ethiopia that will help fight the spread of this malicious disease.” -TOMS
