Tell us your name and where you are from?

My name is Danielle Keenan and I was born and raised in the Bay Area (Oakland, CA)

How long have you been natural?

My natural hair journey started about 3 years ago when I entered college to play D1 basketball. I figured there was not point on trying to perm my hair when I would sweat it out within a day. We practiced for 6 hours a day.

What do you do? Is there a resistance or compatibility with your hair in your field of work?

I am a full time college student and blogger. I also work at the mall at a little boutique. The great thing about being a business major and working in the fashion industry is that you can find and work for people who can appreciate and understand your sense of style. My hair only adds to my personal style.

Describe your hair.

My hair has a mind of its own. It has its own personality, wild and crazy! A lot of people call it a pillow, it’s pretty fluffy and soft, only when its 1st or 2nd day hair. My curls are really tight and can sometimes get matted but I am finding different ways to style my hair to avoid that problem.

What is your hair regimen?
Soooo my hair care regimen is kind of long but here it goes. First of all, I wash my hair every 3 to 4 days. The night before I wash my hair I put oils in it. Before I get all squeaky clean, I wash my hair with Shea Moisture shampoo. After I wash out my hair, I put in Lush retread conditioner and brush through my curls with a wide tooth comb. I finish taking the rest of my shower and before I get out, I was out the Lush retread. I dry my hair and then put in the Lush r&b conditioner all throughout my hair. I then put in Shea Moisture curl enhancing smoothie, which adds moisture, body and shine, and concentrate that on my ends, aftteerrrr that I put Kinky Curly curling custard throughout my hair and scrunch it a little. Most of the time I diffuse my hair but I have been styling it a lot more (doing twist and braid outs) so it doesn’t get frizzy and matted in between washes.

What is your best hair advice?
Best hair advice… USE ORGANIC PRODUCTS! Stay away from sulfates in shampoos and try to deep conditioner your hair 2-3 times a week. O yea, GO NATURAL!

What is the strangest comment, request or hair story?

I constantly get comments on my hair, multiple times a day but I don’t have any strange stories. Just a lot of people want to touch my hair because they think its fake (well only people in Alabama do. I can count on my hands the number of girls I have seen with natural hair out here).

How would you describe your personal fashion style?

Everyone is born with creativity but sadly through schooling and our twisted society a lot of us lose that gift. My sense of style is currently my creative outlet. I used to paint and draw all the time but kind of stop doing it because of the lack of time and space. I have started to draw again but fashion has really grown on me. Instead of drawing and painting everyday I think of multiple outfits to wear that week, they kind of just pop into my head.

What advice would you give to people who might be afraid to show their true fashion for fear of being judged by others?

Sometimes I feel like fashion is kind of at a stand still. Everyone looks the same but just wears different colors or brands. If you are trying to find your style don’t look to others to find your sense of style. Look to colors, art, and ideas of what a particular style is. You will eventually find your own idea of what your style is. Also don’t try to put yourself in a category. My style changes every single day, my collection of clothes can be into every category. Even after you find your sense of style, it doesn’t mean anything if you don’t know how to wear your clothes. You should wear your clothes with CONFIDENCE!! Your style is an extension of self and you should be confident about yourself! WHOO CARESS what people think?! I stopped caring about 4 years ago and I am the happiest and most confident person you’ll ever meet. Figure out who you are as a person and your sense of style will reflect it!

What would you say to others who judge individuals negatively for their personal fashion style?

I personally don’t care for negativity in my life so I could care less if others judge me or other fashionistas for their personal style and I don’t have anything to say to them. I am going to still do me even if someone doesn’t like it simply because I love the person that I am and others love me because of that and I don’t change for those who don’t. DO YOU! There are other people out there who have the same interest as you, it is only a matter of finding them. If you send out love, you will receive it!

When it comes to your style who, what or where does your inspiration come from?

There are very few bloggers that inspire me because most of them are rich and all the outfits they wear are designer brands. I am not knocking designers at all because some of their designs are magnificent artworks. I am knocking all the bloggers who buy all the same designer stuff and wear all the same looks… I mean can we get a little variety people! The manrepeller only owns designer pieces but the way she puts them together I haven’t seen anybody do, her style is amazing! Also Susie from the Stylebubble are a very unique style! All of her clothes are well known brands but she has a amazing fashion sense! But I mainly look to other thrifters for inspiration. Thrifters sense of style is so unique, just like the pieces! I also look at a lot of artwork and I just created a tumblr that exposes me to a lot of different pictures and ideas… I get a lot of inspiration from tumblr.
