1. Tell us your name and where you are from?
Ashley Lewis, Killeen Texas, USA.
2. How long have you been natural?
I have been natural since Winter 2002.
3. What do you do? Is there a resistance or compatibility with your hair in your field of work?
I’m currently moving countries (from US to UK) so haven’t landed a job yet, but have most recently been employed for a small non-profit think tank conducting environmental governance research using the World Health and World Trade Organizations as case studies. Given the non-profit and independent nature of the job, my hair in my field of work has not attracted any heightened attention or anything like that.
4. Describe your hair.
I am bi-racial so my hair is very curly but not particularly coarse, but it takes forever to grow! It also is a very light color due to my mother’s blonde hair I think.
5. What is your regimen?
My hair regimen consists of water only washing usually, but with an apple cider vinegar rinse about once a week to clarify my hair. I also only brush it about 3-4 times a week before I get in the shower. Once its wet and I get out of the shower, I don’t brush it again to help define the curls and give some weight to my very fluffy hair.
6. What is your best hair advice?
My best hair advice would be less is more. I was once at a time where I tried a lot of experimenting with my hair so I changed shampoos and conditioners often to try to reach the best moisture balance. I also would use leave in conditioners, oil sprays and all kinds of after washing projects to try to ‘tame’ my hair. Since I use none of these things now, my hair is much more predictable.
7. What is the strangest comment, request or hair story?
Best hair story: I went to a clothes swapping party in London where everyone was in costume. The DJs play music and when the horn blows, everyone has to swap a piece of clothing with someone else. Apparently, among all of the funky attire, my afroed hair was mistaken for a wig, and when the horn blew next, a girl attempted to swap my ‘wig’ for her scarf and she thrusted her hand into my hair and tugged hard! After she saw the reaction on my face and that it was my actual hair, she was super apologetic and avoided me for the rest of the night!
8. How would you describe your personal fashion style?
My personal fashion style is very simplistic. I wear a lot of blazers, scarfs and solid colors. Navy with white dots is my favorite pattern.
9. Do you have a blog/website?
No personal blog or website
10. What makes you a bush babe?
My low maintenance style, minimalist lifestyle and love of city living (I currently reside in London) makes me a bush babe
