1. Tell us your name and where you are from?
My name is Christella (alter ago name is JolieBrown). I’m originally from Cabaret, Haiti, but my mother and I left and moved to France when I was 1 where I lived for 17 years. I’m currently residing in New Jersey.
2. How long have you been natural?
Officially December 2007 is when I took my last weave out, and I started with my sisterlocks on January 27, 2008.
3. What do you do? Is there a resistance or compatibility with your hair in your field of work?
I’m a high school French teacher. I haven’t experienced any challenges in my professional setting, perhaps, teaching in Newark, NJ, I wouldn’t expect a reaction since many people are familiar with locs/natural black hair.
4. Describe your hair.
Before the perm my hair was very coarse, and to be honest so coarse that I never found a relaxer that did the job. I always had a lot of volume even with the locks.
5. What is your regimen?
Thanks to sisterlocks it has been very easy to maintain a simple regimen. I wash it once a week with shampoo or black soap liquid. I sometimes use conditioner (when I’m not lazy). I usually air dry my hair, and use sweet almond oil once almost dry. I bread it that same day and bread it out the next. For the rest of the week I would where a silky scarf before going to sleep. I also get it retighten every six weeks.
6. What is your best hair advice?
Don’t perm your child’s hair!!! Lol… Embrace your natural hair; so what it’s raining and you don’t have an umbrella your hair won’t melt.
7. What is the strangest comment, request or hair story?
One day I was retightening my hair and my mother witnessing the process for the 1st time asked me “Oh you’re taking them out?”, I replied “nope”, then she followed with “Oh I was already so happy!”. Clearly she hates my locks.
8. How would you describe your personal fashion style?
OMD (French for OMG), I’m confused… I just love clothes. One day I can be very Michelle Obamaish, and the next I can be very hippie. So I want to say, it’s classy hippie chic.
9. Do you have a blog/website?
No, I don’t!
10. What makes you a bush babe?
My love for cultures, my ability to tell you just like it is and my ability to fit in various settings, and bring people to enjoy life around me. By the way it wasn’t always like that until JolieBrown introduced the law of attraction to me again.
