Click Read More + Comment for additional photos. Since we founded Urban Bush Babes two years ago we immediately took a stance on not only healthy hair but health overall. We want to introduce a new feature called ‘Urban Bush Babe Fit’, a series of interviews with inspiring natural hair women who have altered their detrimental past habits to a healthy lifestyle, simultaneously changing the physicality of their bodies, and through their transformation they show us the state of fit does not manifest, unless a mental transformation takes place first.

How long have you been natural?

My last perm was April 2009. I did the BC in December 2009. I transitioned for only 8 months. I wanted to transition for at least a year but I couldn’t take the struggle of dealing with two textures anymore.

What was the definitive factor in going Natural?

I suffered from really bad burns when I would get a perm. It got to the point that I would have scabs all over my head the next day. It was so bad that some of my scabs would even bleed!

How do you style your hair during workout sessions?

I do a lot of protective styling during the week. I usually only wear my hair down for the weekends or special occasions. My hair can get really tangled so I prefer to keep “her” tamed. So when it comes to working out I just keep my hair in the protective style. If by any chance I have my hair out I go with the infamous pineapple.

Did you have to change your hair regimen to cater to your workouts and if so what was your hair regimen like before?

Nope, my hair regimen is pretty simple. Being that I work a full time job, always at the gym, and have a social life, I find myself being very simple when it comes to my hair. I use ACV to clarify my hair bi weekly. I just co-wash every other week. I don’t use shampoo anymore because its sooooooo drying for me….LAWD. I also deep condition bi-weekly. Then I just put in my styling products, seal with an oil, and then do a braidout, twistout, bantu knot, etc and then throw in a high puff or something for the week.

Your top three favorite products and why?

My first choice would definitely have to be my Aussie Moist Conditioner. As soon as I put that stuff on my hair gets extremely soft and it gives me great slip for when its time to detangle. Second would be Beautiful Textures Moisture Butter Whipped Curl Creme because it gives me great 4-5 day hair. And last but not least it would have to be my shea butter mix. I mix shea butter, olive oil, castor oil, avocado oil, coconut oil, and honey together in a jar. This stuff does wonders for my hair!!!!

Three biggest factors you attribute to your length?

LOW MANIPULATION!!!! LOW MANIPULATION!!!! LOW MANIPULATION!!!! This for me works best.

What inspired you to change towards a healthier lifestyle?

I met this girl who is now a really good friend of mine and she was in really good shape. She was always in the gym. I mean her body was BANGING! I admired the way she looked and the confidence that she had. I remembered looking in the mirror at myself one day and I didn’t like my appearance. It was at that very moment that I realized that I need to stop complaining and do something about it. I asked my friend to take me with her to the gym and I haven’t looked back ever since ;)

What was your lifestyle and diet like before you transitioned to your current routine?

During my time in college, I was eating fast food 2-3 times a day, and drinking about 3-4 cans of soda as well. The only exercise I did was bringing the food to my mouth. lol. My hobby was laying on my couch, watching television, and stuffing my face with everything in sight! I was also partying and drinking on a regular basis. Being healthy was the last thing on my mind.

What is your workout plan and diet currently?

I work out six days a week. I do a lot of heavy weight training and cardio. I stick to a strict clean diet, that consist mostly of vegetables and lean meats (chicken breast, ground turkey) and a lot of fish (salmon, tilapia). The only carbs I eat are brown rice, sweet potato, and oatmeal. I also eat “good” fats like almonds, and avocado. I eat 5-6 times a day (3 meals, 2-3 snacks). I drink a gallon of water a day as well. I do not drink soda, or artificial juices. I do allow myself a cheat meal 1-2 times a week where I can have anything I want. I have a really bad sweet tooth so that would usually be where I would get a really good dessert. I also take my vitamins, and omegas 3s every morning and my protein shake and BCAA’s after every workout.

Are your flexitarian, vegetarian, vegan or other?

I’m neither of these.

What physical changes did you notice when you changed your diet?

Completely everything changed! I lost inches everywhere. I’m starting to notice muscles poking out in places where I didn’t even know muscles existed. I love the way I look now. When I look in the mirror, I don’t see that unattractive girl anymore. I see a woman who is confident and sexy and is ready to rock it as soon as she steps outside of her house!

Were your family and friends supportive of your healthy lifestyle?

Even though they think I’m a little extreme sometimes, they support me 100%. Some of my friends and family have actually started to make the change and are starting to work out and eat better.

Who or what inspires you to keep going on your journey?

I have this one picture I took at the beginning of my fitness journey that I look at all the time. It reminds me of where I never want to go back to. When I think that I’m not making progress, it is a constant reminder of how far I have come. That picture inspires me to take my butt to the gym.

What are your favorite workout vehicle; sports, gym, dance, etc and why?

Weight training hands down!!!!! Ladies, it is a MYTH that lifting heavy weights will get you bulky. I’m a good example. I’m not bulky at all. I can leg press 450 lbs…..and I weigh 134! I love challenging my strength and seeing how far I can push myself.

Current playlist you love to listen to while working out or for motivation?

It depends on my mood but I switch from either that hardcore HIP HOP, to reggae, to some booty music. (I sometimes catch myself dancing in the mirror at my gym and people just give me these weird looks, hehe.

Favorite motivational book and movie?

I can’t think of one at the moment lol.

What motivates you on those days you feel like calling it quits?

I have a friend named Ava, who is my gym partner. We compete with each other and we make sure that we hold each other accountable.

Name your favorite dish and restaurant?

I love my version of a loaded baked potato. Instead of using a regular potato, I use a sweet potato instead. Throw on some non-fat greek yogurt (taste like sour cream), ground turkey, scallions, and a little bit of low fat cheese. Delish!!!!!

Most embarrassing moment?

Walking around the gym thinking I was cute with a huge ass whole in my tights exposing myself. Sooooo embarrassing…and I didn’t realize it until the end of my workout. *smacks forehead*

What advice would you give to someone who is contemplating a healthier lifestyle?

I would start by saying fitness will change your life drastically! Words can’t explain. You feel better, you look better. You only have one body so therefore we need to take care of it.
