Tell us your name and where you are from?

My name is Jorian, and I’m from Toronto, Canada.  I’m of Jamaican background, both my parents are Jamaican.

How long have you been natural?

I started transitioning in March of 2009 and I cut my permed ends in June of 2010.  So I’ve been completely natural for about 1 year and 2 months.

What do you do? Is there a resistance or compatibility with your hair in your field of work?

Well, I recently worked at American Apparel and Abercrombie and Fitch.  American Apparel is very open and was completely fine with my hair and I never had any complaints, just compliments. Abercrombie is a different story.  They have a very strict “look policy” which includes no braids, no dreads, no nail polish, eye make up etc. I was almost sent home during a shift when the district manager came in to check on things.  Instead of coming to me, He went to my floor manager and told her that my hair was not “look policy”.  She pulled me to back and asked me if i had a hair band or a brush so I could comb my hair. My hair was in a twist- out done on dry hair and I pinned up the sides into a fro-hawk.  It had a lot of volume, so it was quite big.  My manager explained to me that she was sorry and she loved my hair, and it was the district manager who wanted me to change it.  When I told her I had no brush and I wasn’t going to change my hair for a 4 hour shift, she told me she would talk to district….and I just continued on with my evening.  As of September 6th, I will have no more Abercrombie worries because I will be going back to school to start my 4 year program for a Bachelor of Applied Arts in Photography.  My goal is to become a fashion/editorial photographer.

Describe your hair.

Thick, bi-polar, and versatile

What is your regimen?

Oh god! I’m an extremely lazy natural.  I’ve tried to come up with a regimen before.  I said to myself I wanted to wash my hair once a week and deep-condition each time I washed and that was a FAIL! Now I wash my hair whenever, maybe every 2 weeks, sometimes 3 weeks.  My hair likes to shrink by the second week so I usually detangle my hair and do a twist out.  When I wash my hair I detangle with Sauve Naturals or VO5 conditioner and then I co-wash.  I rarely use shampoo. I deep-condition my hair with Olive oil deep penetrating conditioner and I usually mix it with some Olive oil, Castor oil, mayo, and honey.  I like to leave it in for a 1 hour, but it ends up staying in at least 2 or 3 hours because I’m stuck at my computer screen on tumblr and UrbanBushBabes! Then I just twist my hair and let it air dry. I’m not into a whole bunch of products, although I would like to start using more natural oils.  Right now, the only thing I put in my hair is Castor oil, that’s it.  When i do a puff I’ll use the Olive oil smooth-n-hold pudding for the sides and I’ll use Eco-Styler olive oil gel for those baby hairs.

What is your best hair advice?

Be patient and create your own routine and just remember what works for someone else will not necessarily work for you. It’s been said already, but is very true.

What is the strangest comment, request or hair story?

I don’t think I have any stories, ummmmm….. jokingly my bestie likes to call me psycho bob whenever I do a twist out haha.  People always ask me how I do my twist outs. Some people like to touch/pet my hair. My boyfriend loves my hair , but always says my twist out looks like a spider and the most famous is the “You look like Erykah Badu” comment.

How would you describe your personal fashion style?

I don’t have a specific style, but I would say its fresh and bright. I like a lot of different things and I guess it depends on my mood.  I love colour (lol, Canadian spelling) and I love mixing patterns. I also love hair accessories like bows and twist scarves.

What advice would you give to people who might be afraid to show their true fashion for fear of being judged by others?

I say do what you want and don’t even worry about what people are saying, people talk, and 99% of time those people are wishing they were dressed like you.

What would you say to others who judge individuals negatively for their personal fashion style?

 COME AT ME BRO!

When it comes to your style who, what or where does your inspiration come from?

When it comes to my style, my inspiration comes from my surroundings, photos, and music.

Do you have a blog/website?

I have my tumblr : iwannaseeuinthedark.tumblr.com   I don’t have a personal blog, but I will be creating a website soon for my photography, but right now I’m on facebook : Jorian Alea

Anything else?
Nope!

What makes you an Urban bush babe?

I’m an Urban Bush Babe because I’m always myself. I wear what I want, I do my hair how I want and that’s that!
