After a year hiatus from their last video collaboration of single, ‘Don’t Break Me Off‘, WonderKiss is back in full effect, and I had the chance to go behind the scenes of their latest music video, ‘Won’t Lay Down’. A female duo group, WonderKiss fuses together the electronic sounds of Lyricist/Singer/Songwriter; TK Wonder and Singer/Songwriter/Producer, Kissey. A compilation of both their expertise with Tk Wonder wearing the Vocalist/Songwriter hat, and Kissey taking on as the Producer, their music redefines and even transpires the electronic mold creating a new sound all of their own and ‘Won’t Lay Down’ definitely takes us there.
Directed by the gifted Contemporary Artist, Tim Okamura whom was one of several artists to be shortlisted in 2006 for a proposed portrait of Queen Elizabeth of England, and whose work graces the private collections of Uma Thurman, Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson (The Roots), Director Ben Younger, Bryan Greenberg, Vanessa Marcil, Annabella Sciorra and Ethan Hawke. Okamura along with DP Laurence Mathieu-Léger, take ‘Won’t Lay Down’ into a Samurai, post apocalyptic, new age Warriors meets Mad Max vibe, backed with a anthem of ‘Won’t Lay Down’, you can get an exact sense of why the direction fits so harmoniously, but the harmonious energy is also a personal one.
For those of you who don’t know, TK Wonder is my identical twin sister and was ignited to write the lyrics to ‘Won’t Lay Down’ due to recent events in my life. TK Wonder states:
“These lyrics were inspired by my sister and what she had to go through to shine light on the brutal attack of her boyfriend and his twin brother in order to seek some form of justice since the NYPD closed the case then only reopened it once they became aware that she discovered evidence and it would be aired on the local news. However this song is about not giving up the fight for what you truly believe in, no matter if someone endeavors to thwart your path or tells you what you are trying to achieve is impossible. Not backing down from someone or something and staying the course for justice, your goals or beliefs. Being empowered when all seems lost and knowing there is goodness when you are lost in the dark because without the dark how can you see the light.”
Lets just say words can’t even come close in describing in not only how blessed I felt to have someone personally write a song correlating to my exact tumultuous emotions at that time, but written/performed and produced by such beautifully talented women, who one I can call my best friend for life left me speechless.
